Texas Lies, FLDS Kids Die

More lies from the state of Texas about their inept raid on the FLDS YFZ ranch earlier this month.

At least 41 children taken from a polygamist sect’s Texas ranch may have had past broken bones, officials say

Scandal! 10% off the children who the state stole from their parents MAY have had a broken bone in the past! I wonder if Texas realizes these kids grew up on a working ranch, with all the attendant dangers a ranch presents.
What’s the percentage of kids who had at least one broken bone in their lives? I’m unsure but I can say that at least 20% of my cousins broke an arm or a wrist or a foot when we were kids. I guess breaking a bone is now grounds for the state to seize your children.

UPDATE: This study shows that 25% of minors will experience at least a fractured bone sometime in their lives. Guess the 10% of FLDS kids is less than the national average. The state is going to need to seize an awful lot of kids using this standard.

And why is the media reporting every utterance from the state as if it were truth? The bias on this issue is repulsive - but completely expected from a mainstream media that can’t actually be bothered to investigate anything they’re reporting. Shameful!

Oh and how about this gem? More than 9 of the kids have been hospitalized (and two are accounted for) since they were seized from their parents. But you know - the state of Texas knows a lot more than the parents what’s good for them.

The picture below shows part of the heavily armed team the state sent in to seize these kids.

Gas Tax Holiday!

Oh boy I am so excited about this inane idea. Let’s suspend gas taxes to make gas cheaper because Americans have a right to drive their cars as much as they want, wherever they want, no matter the cost to the environment or to roads or anything else! And the rest of the world should pay for it - not us!!!!

What’s sad is that 8 years ago Hillary Clinton spoke out against this exact same thing and now she’s pandering. I don’t know why I’m shocked. From a sleazy Republican like John McCain I expect this sort of crap but not from a Democrat.

Countdown to the Final Return

I’ll be leaving New York for good on May 15 30th. I set the date today as I was waiting for just a few things to clear up a bit and after they did I knew I could pick the correct date.

I will be coming back to NY sometime the end of August to pack/store/give away/ship everything I don’t take with me this time but after that it’ll be only for vacations.

The Shameful anti-Polygamy Raid in Texas

I’ve taken a lot of heat on various blogs for speaking out against the disgusting raid the state of Texas carried out on the YFZ ranch in Eldorado.

Guess what? I’m not even through.

The raid violated so many constitutional rights of the FLDS I bet the trial lawyers are salivating over the lawsuits they’re going to file when this debacle is over. Putting 400+ children in protective custody based on false information from some crazy crank who had nothing to do with the FLDS in the first place is wrong and perverse.

If you’re interested check out this website. I have nothing in common with the FLDS and their religious beliefs but everything in common with their desire to not be persecuted by the state.

So Happy for the Return

My apartment, as most apartment in New York, is overheated. I think the law in NY states that if the temperature is below 56 degrees the building’s heat must be turned on. So as soon as the temperature drops the heat goes on, and in two years of living here I’ve never turned on my radiators because my apartment is always warm, too warm. That may be from living on the 12th floor - but in any case it sucks.

And so it goes today. It’s 52 degrees outside but feels like it’s 80 degrees in my apartment.  I’ll be so glad to get back to CA where I can live in an environment that’s not either alternatively freezing or scorching hot.

One thing I’ll miss about NY is my long nights out - like Friday when I was at Mansion and then Bungalow 8 and then two afterhours, ultimately arriving back home at 5:00 on Saturday - I feel like a wreck today.

Putting Money Where the Mouth Is

I’ve been engaged in a long-running argument with a dear friend of mine in LA. We’ve known one another for more than 10 years, I’ve known two of his long-term boyfriends and he’s generally a joy to be around.

But we fight non-stop about the Obama-Hillary campaign. He’s a vociferous Hillary supporter and you all know where I stand.

The funny thing is: I’m a poor student and he’s a wealthy professional working in a high-profile position with a prestigious university in Los Angeles. So far I’ve given over $1100 to Obama and he’s given… $220 to Hillary.

This shows the difference between the supporters of Hillary and those of Obama. We believe in him so strongly we put out money where our mouths are - while Hillary’s supporters are all talk. We’ll see who lasts until the end.

Trashed

During finals week my apartment becomes completely trashed. I sit in the middle of my living room surrounded by heaps of books and reports and write my papers. Typically I’ll do research first and then begin the writing process. At times I will write for up to three hours straight with no music and only one soft light on - only pausing to find the correct source or to do a bit of further reading. I basically get in a fugue state.

Like last night - I came home, walked in, sat down and started writing. I did so until well after 1:00 AM and at the end had a finished paper on the legality of the war in Iraq. Cunningly I took the opposite position of the one I argued in debate - in the paper I said the war was illegal. Using the IRAC (Issue, Rule, Argument, Conclusion) format I learned at Boalt Hall I composed a masterful paper that deftly knocks down each and every legal argument in favor of the war.

All my final papers are now done other than three short essays for my European Expansionism class. Tonight I go out and celebrate.

Au Revoir FLQ!!

I’m finished with my paper on the FLQ and it will be sad to no longer immerse myself in the subtleties of Quebecois terrorism day after day.

I’ve one more paper to write and it’s due tomorrow. I’m not panicking - yet. Check back tomorrow, I’ll prolly be freaking out after that.

I’m a Bit

unsure as to what was funnier on today’s NYT op-ed page: Frank Rich’s amazing column eviscerating last week’s “debate” or Maureen Dowd’s pathetic attempt to convince us that she knows what “real Americans” want to hear from their political candidates.

Obama has to prove to Americans that, despite his exotic background and multicultural looks, he shares or at least respects their values and understands why they would be upset about his associations with the Rev. Wright and an ex-Weatherman.

What’s behind this statement is the fact that Maureen Dowd can’t accept that the media’s attempts to manufacture “crises” around non-issues like the Weather Underground or Reverend Wright have been a complete and utter failure.

Like the rest of the Beltway media she lives in a cocooned and rarified echo chamber which is entirely separate from the “real Americans” she claims to understand. In between attending dinner parties on the upper West side and cocktail parties in Georgetown Maureen may have bumped into an “American” unconnected with the social elite of which she’s a member but I highly doubt it. Her claim to know what “Americans” want is beyond ridiculous, it’s analogous to the Queen of England claiming she knows what 16-year old girls from Islington want because she drove through the city one time.

Poor Maureen Dowd. Unmarried, bitter, menopausal and now even more out of touch than usual.

I left

DC today to peals of thunder and a downpour so fierce it drenched my pants and shoes with water in the 3 seconds it took for me to hop into my cab from under the shelter of an umbrella.

DC was fun and the weather, besides today, was quite nice. It was good to see Stephen and KK again and enjoy their beautiful new apartment.
